It is rare that gamers get a true glimpse of what happens behind the doors of their favorite video game development studio, or a glimpse behind the doors of any game development studio at all for that matter. Double Fine’s newly released (and shadow-dropped) “PsychOdyssey” is just that. A 32-part, 12+ hour docuseries that spans from the original conception of eventual Game of the Year award winner Psychonauts 2 to the release of the final product, with all trials and triumphs edited together in a truly remarkable package.

The series covers a large variety of the struggles that independent game development studies go through from being too ambitious with a lack of stable funding to the immense passion the development team champions even to its own detriment of leading to a culture of crunch. If you’re interested in what went on behind the scenes of one of the industries’ most revered games in recent years or hopeful to get into the video games industry yourself, this series is quite insightful.
