This past year has seen a stunning number of high-quality games released and this past week Geoff Keighley brought the gaming industry together for The Game Awards in Los Angeles to celebrate them. Keighley’s 3.5 hour marathon of a show featured a number of world premieres of new games and fresh looks at previously announced titles, while weaving award winners in between. For the sake of this piece and to honor this year’s recipients, we’re going to focus mainly on the award winners.
Baldur’s Gate 3 left the show as the biggest winner of the night, taking home the coveted Game of the Year award, alongside 5 other wins for Best Performance (Neil Newbon), Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, Best Community Support, and the all-important Player’s Voice award, which is chosen directly by player voting as opposed to by critics. Alan Wake 2 finished as runner-up with 3 awards on the night in Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. While Forza Motorsport crossed the finish line in 3rd with the Best Sports/Racing and Innovation In Accessibility awards.
Sabotage’s Studios’ Sea of Stars took home the Best Independent Game award, while Geometric Interactive’s Cocoon won this year’s Best Debut Indie Game. The largest nominated game to go home with zero awards was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which entered the night with 7 nominations and left with no trophy in-hand.
