Announced in 2022 during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Ara: History Untold was fully unveiled at Gamescom last week. With a stunning almost two minute long gameplay reveal, fans were introduced to what Xbox is offering in their first historical strategy turn-based 4X game from their partner gaming studio Oxide Games.

The initial reaction to the gameplay trailer was the vast similarities to Sid Meier’s Civilization games. The goal of the game is for the player to pick a civilization and develop the nation through choices involving politics, military campaigns, colonization of lands, science, and more. The civilizations shown in the gameplay trailer include Egypt, led by Queen Nefertiti, Greece, led by Greek Poet Sappho, and the United States, led by ol’ George Washington himself. Other civilizations will be announced in the future.

Ara: History Untold is being developed by the team at Oxide Games based in Maryland. Founders Dan Baker, Tim Kipp, Brian Wade, Marc Meyer all met while working at Firaxis, developing Sid Meier’s Civilization V.

Ara: History Untold is slated for a 2024 release, and most likely will be released before the next Sid Meier’s Civilization game. Ara: History Untold will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
