One of the world’s most historic gaming brands, Atari, is not only still around, but making some significant moves. This past week Atari announced the acquisition of more than 100 PC and console titles from the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the trademarks to the Accolade and GTI brands. The recently acquired collection includes Bubsy, Hardball, the Demolition Racer series, 1942: Pacific Air War, the F-14 air combat series, and more, which will join Atari classics Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and others in their storied portfolio.
In the company’s accompanying press release Atari CEO Wade Rosen went on to state that, “Many of these titles are a part of Atari history, and fans can look forward to seeing many of these games re-released in physical and digital formats, and in some cases, even ported to modern consoles.”
As Atari looks to continue to reinvent itself in today’s video game industry, the company is looking to expand Atari’s business by leveraging it’s large library of classic IPs to not only re-release games, but to also reimagine storylines, reviving classics in new and intriguing ways. Following the recent success of PlayStation’s The Last Of Us television series on HBO and Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it may not be a far reach to imagine Atari attempting to adapt some of their games to the silver screen in the years ahead as well.
