Blizzard Entertainment announced they have acquired Proletariat, the studio that created Spellbreak. The Boston-based studio was acquired with the intent of assisting on World of Warcraft (WoW) development.
Proletariat released a statement after the acquisition was announced stating, “We are grateful to everyone in the game’s community for exploring the magical worlds and experiences we created together. Spellbreak was an ambitious project that saw our team push new boundaries in design and development and we are excited to continue to innovate as we create new titles in the future.”
With the acquisition, Proletariat will become a part of Blizzard, bringing along a team of 100 employees. This marks one of Blizzard’s largest acquisitions in recent years for the WoW development team. The newest members of Blizzard will go right to work on WoW’s upcoming expansion, “Dragonflight.”
Activision-Blizzard are in the middle of being acquired by Microsoft in the largest acquisition deal of the gaming industry for $68.7 billion dollars. The merger received a major boost this week when a supportive letter was sent to the Federal Trade Commission from one of the largest unions in the United States, the Communications Workers of America. The deal is expected to close between now and next June.
