CD Projekt Red has finally revealed the upcoming DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, named “Phantom Liberty.” It’s the first major expansion for the game after several updates that have been released since the game launched, including the next-gen update that brought the game to version 1.5 Unfortunately, it looks like this will also be the only major expansion that Cyberpunk will be getting.
The teaser trailer for Phantom Liberty doesn’t give a lot of information, but it does show our protagonist, V, taking an oath to the New United States of America. We also got to hear the voice of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand warning V against what is happening. The DLC promises to explore a new part of Night City and include a bunch of new weapons and gear. It should be a fun and exciting update to a game that has improved a lot since it launched and is expected to arrive sometime in 2023.
So now for the bad news: a response to a Youtube comment by the Cyberpunk account stated that Phantom Liberty is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. After this, the head of PR at CD Projekt Red confirmed to Polygon that there are indeed no plans for further expansion to Cyberpunk 2077. It sounds like the game will continue to receive smaller content updates as it has been doing since the game launched, which includes update 1.6 that went live at the same time as the DLC announcement.
If you are playing Cyberpunk on Xbox One or the PS4, I have more bad news. Phantom Liberty is next-gen only and will not be coming to the last gen consoles. Additionally, update 1.6 is the last update that will be released for those consoles. In effect, this is the end of support for those versions of the game. If you were one of those that purchased the Cyberpunk 2077 edition Xbox One X console, CD Projekt Red revealed that in place of the DLC players will receive funds in their Xbox accounts. There’s no word yet on how much it will be or when it will be deposited.
Since it launched, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a mixed bag. At launch the game was memed for rough graphics and weird bugs. Since then, CD Projekt Red has improved the game’s quality iteratively and earned back some goodwill from players. While it stinks for owners of the game on Xbox One and PS4, it makes sense to stay focused on one generation of consoles and release the best product possible.
