Eyes up, Guardians. It looks like the wait for The Final Shape is going to be longer after all. Weeks after some big layoffs and a report that the expansion was getting delayed, Bungie finally confirmed it this week right before its newest season launched. Bungie and Destiny 2 are in a bit of a rough spot, with both community sentiment and player count dwindling. The unfair part is that the actual developers at Bungie are putting out great content for the game that active players are really enjoying.
Originally set to launch February 27, 2024, The Final Shape is the grand finale of the story that started 10 years ago with the release of the original Destiny. Bungie has been fairly secretive with the new expansion, showing off only a few details and story teases. The hope is that the expansion is truly world changing and nicely ties all the different plot threads and characters together into a nice, satisfying bow. The expansion now releases on June 4, 2024 with Bungie planning to show more sometime in April.
To fill that time, Guardians will have to turn to the season that just launched this week, the Season of the Wish. The season was meant to only last for 3 months, but will now stretch a full 6 months. After introducing 2 great activities in the previous season, Bungie developers appear to have hit the ball out of the park again with the new activities. First off is The Coil, a 3-player matchmade activity that is equal parts labyrinth and firefight. The mode is not time-based and rewards careful exploration along with great combat. There is loads of loot to be earned and a lot of secrets to find that are worth the reward. The activity will grow each week as well. The other big addition is the new Dungeon, Warlord’s Ruin. The dungeon opened on Friday and players have been raving about it nonstop ever since. Many are calling it the best dungeon that has been released and potentially one of the best activities yet.
Those 2 activities may not be enough content to keep players happy for 6 full months, but there are others coming to help. In December, players can take part in The Dawning, Destiny 2’s winter holiday event. The Guardian Games, a competition between the 3 classes, will be back in March 2024. After Season of the Wish content ends, Bungie will release weekly content called Wishes to fill those gaps until April. Bungie announced something called Into the Light that will begin to release in April that is meant to prepare players, new and old, for The Final Shape. There will also be new Crucible maps in May. Guardians can always go back to some previous seasonal activities as well. It’s not perfect, but Bungie has a plan to fill the gap from the delay and will hopefully deliver big when the expansion drops in June.
