Another year is coming to a close and The Game Awards crowned the 2022 Game of the Year. Elden Ring managed to beat out God of War Ragnarok, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for the illustrious award. Most players and critics had the vote down to Elden Ring and God of War, but in the end, the George R.R. Martin-based game took its place above a god to secure a well-deserved win. In addition to taking Game of The Year, Elden Ring also earned wins in Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best RPG.
From finely tuned fight mechanics to the open world aspect, Elden Ring wasn’t afraid to push the boundaries and expand on the Soulsborne genre. The use of stealth was a welcome addition as well as the ample amounts of side quests to help keep players engaged while traveling the large open world, taking on rigorous fights and the punishing consequences of death.
While God of War Ragnarok didn’t win Game of the Year, it did manage to take home quite a bit of hardware in other categories, in fact, God of War took home the most awards on the night. Kratos and the team at Sony Santa Monica took home wins for Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Best Action/Adventure, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Performance.
