Since its November 2020 launch, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has already undergone several redesigns. As we creep closer to the three year anniversary of the launch of the PS5, Sony has confirmed their gaming console has received its fourth redesign.
On the outside, consumers won’t see many changes to the large, bulky, and obscure look of the PS5, but as the old saying goes, “it’s what’s inside that counts.” The newly redesigned PS5 features a smaller motherboard, different cooling elements, and an updated enclosure of the SSD.
It’s normal to see redesigns of consoles over their lifespan, including slim or vastly reduced sized versions of the consoles towards the midway point of the console generation. In the case of reducing heat, finding new ways to keep the console from overheating is always welcomed by gamers for those long gaming sessions. These changes to the new model of the PS5 also come with a nice update to the power it consumes. The new unit uses 20-30 watts less than the launch model.
These changes will help improve heat distribution, power usage, and lower the weight of the console. With all these changes, one could argue that the less material would help drive down manufacturing prices. With recent news that Sony is raising the prices of the PS5 in the UK, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, and Canada, these new reductions in manufacturing cost will help to line the pockets of Sony executives with the increased profit margins.
