In what is looking to be a ragnarökin’ holiday window for the gaming industry, Sony Santa Monica’s God of War Ragnarök, sequel to their critically-acclaimed hit God of War (2018), is set to lead the way. Putting up an impressive 94/100 score on OpenCritic ahead of its release this week, God of War Ragnarök finds its spot as the second-highest rated game this year, just behind generational masterpiece Elden Ring (which scored a 95/100). The release of Ragnarök coupled with increased production of PlayStation 5 consoles should set Sony up for a very strong end of the year for their PlayStation division.
In an attempt to stay as spoiler-free as possible, Ragnarök continues in the footsteps of its 2018 predecessor with a means to continue the Norse mythology saga from the eyes of Kratos and his son Atreus. Without changing its core feeling, God of War Ragnarök has found ways to improve upon its gameplay from taking advantage of the haptics of the PS5 DualSense controller to including over 70 accessibility settings in the mix. Ragnarök is also receiving high praise around its improved upon side questing with The Washington Post’s Gene Park going so far as to say that it has “finally dethroned The Witcher 3 with the best side quests…in an adventure game.” With some of the game’s most intriguing fights, awe-inspiring areas, and heartfelt stories directly woven into the game’s side quests, they’re definitely worth considering.
God of War Ragnarök will nearly double the run time of its prequel with an estimate of around 20 hours at its core and an additional 20 hours of side content bringing the total to a whopping 40 hours (yeah, yeah nothing compared to a JRPG, but still impressive all the same). Fans can go hands-on with this soon-to-be Game Of The Year nominee themselves when it releases on PS4 and PS5 consoles this Wednesday, November 9th.
