Twenty-five years after its initial release on the Nintendo 64 (N64), beloved video game and console shooter pioneer, GoldenEye 007 is back! After years of rumors and even a few leaks last year, Nintendo announced during September’s Nintendo Direct, that Rare is releasing GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Xbox.
While the game was announced at the same time, the Switch and Xbox will be receiving two different versions (aside from featuring the classic campaign mode and in-game cheat codes). The Switch version will be available on the Switch Online library and will mostly be the original N64 game, but will feature an online multiplayer mode. The Xbox version will be a remastered version of the classic game but will feature achievements (leaked last year by website True Achievements), 4K resolution, and a smoother framerate. While the Xbox version is expected to be the graphically superior of the two releases of the game, it will not feature online multiplayer. The Xbox remastered version will be available on Xbox Game Pass.
Originally, the remake of GoldenEye 007 was rumored to have launched back in 2008 on the Xbox 360, but due to complications with licensing rights, a deal was never made and the game was never finished. Fans of the game held on to hope as Rare’s spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, received a remastered update in 2010.
The release date was not confirmed for either version of GoldenEye 007.
