This past week was home to a number of high profile game releases across multiple platforms and genres. Here’s how they’ve landed so far:
A Plague Tale: Requiem (84 on OpenCritic) – As a sequel to 2019’s award-winning A Plague Tale: Innocence, Requiem sees Amicia and Hugo embark on the next leg of their brutal, emotional journey. This one isn’t for the faint of heart, but it is definitely a stealth-based, action adventure game that is worth checking out. A Plague Tale: Requiem is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass.
MARVEL SNAP (Unrated on OpenCritic) – A new style of card game that blends the basic card play of Supercell’s Clash Royale with popular card collector game tropes, while adding in unique location-based modifiers and more. With a very free-to-play friendly model and the depth of Marvel’s character roster to draw from, this one has the potential to start hot and last long, already topping both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store in its launch week. MARVEL SNAP is currently available on mobile and PC (via Steam).
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed (74 on OpenCritic) – A fun take on the multiplayer genre sees four proton pack-wielding Ghostbusters attempt to catch a player-controlled ghost tasked with haunting various locations. As players progress, they will unlock upgrades to evolve their gameplay experience (as both a ghostbuster and a ghost). From the sound of things, this one is quite fun with a group of friends. Check out Eric’s recent review here.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (86 on OpenCritic) – The highest rated game launch of the week goes to the Italian plumber and his minion-like Rabbid companions. In Sparks of Hope, Mario and friends head out to explore planets throughout a vast galaxy as they seek to defeat an evil entity and save the Sparks. This XCOM-like tactics game blends strategy with quirkiness, creating quite the enjoyable experience according to critics.
Gotham Knights (70 on OpenCritic) – Looking to expand Gotham beyond just Batman, Gotham Knights allows players to play as Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, as they take on the Court of Owls and hope to save Gotham City. Unfortunately, this one hasn’t landed so well with critics with many focusing on the choppiness of play at 30 frames per second and the lack of interesting story-driven content. This one may be worth waiting for a sale, but don’t let us talk you out of it, if it is still high on your list.
Some other releases of note: The Jackbox Party Pack 9, New Tales from the Borderlands, and Modern Warfare 2 campaign early access.
