The Doom Slayer has arrived on mobile devices and is doing what he does best, slaying the competition. Bethesda Softworks and its subsidiary Alpha Dog officially released the mobile game Mighty Doom on March 21 for Android and iOS. The game has been so popular since its launch that it hit #1 on the free-to-play charts for both Google Play and the App Store. Currently, it’s still #1 for Google Play and #5 on the App Store. Not bad at all for a new but familiar take on the fast, frantic shooter that is the Doom franchise.

Mighty Doom is a top-down, one-touch shooter with, quite frankly, adorable chibi graphics. Gameplay is simple with a primary gun that is always firing and two additional weapons that can be used at different intervals. The game auto targets the enemy you are closest to and the player controls movement with just a finger. Much like its lifesize counterpart, the game encourages you to keep moving to dodge attacks and to get up close and personal for Glory Kills that restore health and give bonus resources. It’s actually impressive how much of the original game’s design and attitude translate to this more adorable spinoff. There’s even plenty of cartoony blood and gore, which players can customize to different colors or even turn it off.

Of course it wouldn’t be a free-to-play mobile game without some ads and monetization. Thankfully the ads are only videos that can be watched for a couple different daily resources and a free continue if you run out of health on a playthrough. As far as spending money goes, players can unlock additional things like slayer suits, crystals, and coins. Crystals are used to purchase supply crates and coins are used for leveling up your slayer and gear. There are daily quests and dungeons that can provide these items as well. Most things are unlockable with some time and effort and are meant to be part of the gameplay loop. Spending money isn’t required to advance or win here, but like most mobile games it could certainly speed some things up.

Mighty Doom is a surprisingly faithful and fun spinoff of the Doom franchise that any fan of mobile action games should check out. The gameplay loop and mechanics are simple to understand, but endlessly replayable. New content down the line should keep things fresh and provide new things to unlock. You won’t need to spend any money to enjoy yourself but the game is entertaining enough that throwing a little to the team that made it is certainly worthwhile. Mighty Doom is available to download right now for Android and iOS.
