After years of declining player counts and associated revenue, formerly popular minigame website “Miniclip” has announced that it will be shutting down its servers for all games except 8 Ball Pool and Agar.io. With the heavy majority of Miniclip’s games running on Adobe Flash player and the industry as a whole moving further and further away from Adobe Flash, it felt like a shutdown or significant model change had to come soon enough.
UK-based publisher Miniclip originally alluded to their plan to shut down their web-based games back in the Spring when they stated that they plan to focus more and more on their mobile games moving forward. To date, Miniclip’s mobile games (including Agar.io, 8 Ball Pool, Mini Militia, and others) have exceeded 4 billion downloads globally. While Miniclip choosing to end support for their web browser games urges in the end of an era (and the tears of many millennials who grew up on them), it does seem to be the smart decision for a publisher looking for a better revenue-generating model, as they look to adapt in the ever-changing video games industry.
