It was boots on the ground this past week for the Call of Duty marketing team as they released a plethora of details surrounding their highly-anticipated Modern Warfare 3 title set to land later this year. Although leakers took the honor of the initial announcement, Activision officially revealed the game with an in-game event in their popular battle-royale Warzone, followed by a lengthy blog post. Here’s the gist:

Campaign: The game’s campaign will pick up where Modern Warfare 2’s campaign left off, focusing on Vladamir Makarov (from the original Modern Warfare franchise) as the main villain. In addition to the tried and true Call of Duty formula, the campaign will also offer “free-form Open Combat Missions [OCMs]” this time around. OCMs will place the player in large, open areas, giving the player more choice on how to complete certain objectives as they progress through the mission(s).

Multiplayer: On the multiplayer side of things, Activision will be inducing a nice dose of nostalgia, including not just a couple, but all 16 maps from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, remastered for Modern Warfare 3’s launch. In addition, the team has confirmed 12 new core 6v6 maps, 3 large maps for Ground War mode, and one “colossal-size” map for War mode in the plans as well. MW3 will also see the return of some fan-favorite features: map voting between matches, a return to the classic minimap that featured red dots when unsilenced weapons were fired, and a return to the classic perk system, with all perks available at the start of the match.

Zombies: For the first time ever, Treyarch’s popular Zombies mode will be making its way into the Modern Warfare franchise with a revamped style. The Zombies mode will be moving away from its round-based roots and transitioning into an open-world experience focused on survival and extraction, landing somewhere between Warzone’s DMZ and Black Ops Cold War’s Outbreak mode.

Last, but far from least, Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty will be moving to a new, unified hub “Call of Duty HQ” where players will link up to access Modern Warfare 2, Warzone, Modern Warfare 3, and future CoD games all in one place. With this move, most Modern Warfare 2 weapons, operators, camos, etc will also move with the player to Modern Warfare 3.
