Minecraft may be a world made of blocks, but don’t ask them about the blockchain. Mojang, the developer behind the mega-hit franchise, released a letter on their website to state their feelings about NFTs and the blockchain. They left no room for doubt or uncertainty, that’s for sure. To sum up their statement (which you can read here), Mojang says that NFTs create an environment of “Haves” and “Have Nots” based on their scarcity and that goes against the game’s message of creativity, inclusion, and playing together. It’s a nice message that does seem to be reflected in the decisions the developer makes around the property, considering you can pretty much play Minecraft on any platform imaginable with just about anyone anywhere in the world.
The idea of NFTs and the blockchain in the world of video games has been floating around the internet for a while now – most famously Square Enix proclaimed that it would focus on bringing story-based NFTs to its games, whatever that means. The concept of NFTs and the blockchain in general is still relatively young and is constantly evolving. While many NFT networks have seen a major crash recently, the idea still has legs and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere just yet. Don’t expect to see them in your Minecraft server when you log on though.
