Netflix announced multiple new video game to movie and show adaptations this week joining a star-studded roster of critically-acclaimed hits including The Witcher, Arkane (based on League of Legends), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The latest property to join the party is none other than one of Microsoft’s most highly acclaimed sagas: Gears of War.
Gears is set in a society on the brink of collapse due to the emergence of an unexpected, alien-like threat from below the planet’s surface. Legendary war hero and convicted war criminal (quite the combination, right?) Marcus Fenix takes the helm of a ragtag fireteam tasked with leading humanity’s last stand. With over 40 million copies sold to date, Gears of War has shipped 5 mainline game installments and 3 spin-offs with at least 1 more title currently in the works. Per their announcement, Netflix plans to adapt the video game series into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series with the potential for more stories to follow.
In addition to the video game properties mentioned above, Netflix is also planning new adaptations for all of these as well: Assassin’s Creed, Beyond Good & Evil, Bioshock, Castlevania, Devil May Cry, Dragon Age, Far Cry, Horizon Zero Dawn, Sonic, Tomb Raider, and two Tom Clancy properties The Division and Splinter Cell.
