The announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED Model was met with some mixed feelings. On one hand, people were very excited for the better display on the handheld screen and the improvements to the design. On the other hand, it’s not the more powerful 4K model that many people were anticipating. Now reports are going around that Nintendo stands to make more money from this console before potentially releasing another new model later this year.

The Reports: Let’s look at the reports that first came out. Bloomberg reported that an estimation of the improvements made to the Switch OLED model would only add approximately $10 to the production cost, yet the unit is $50 more than the original Switch. That sort of difference in costs would indicate that Nintendo is poised to make a pretty penny on each of these new consoles. Bloomberg also reported that Nintendo was preparing to release a new model in October that might have the features fans wanted this time around.

Nintendo Responds: Nintendo released a statement responding directly to these reports. It was an unusual move for the company, but one that was welcome from the fans and most likely the investors as well. Nintendo flat out denied the assertion that the price margin on the new model was significantly more than the original Switch. They didn’t release any numbers for either unit, but the statement made it pretty clear where they stand. They also reiterated that no model outside of the OLED model is planned at this time.
