Last week Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Tropic Haze LLC, the company behind Nintendo Switch video game emulator “yuzu,” claiming that yuzu’s business model helps video game piracy flourish. Nintendo cited The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as one of the games heavily affected by the presence of the emulator, stating that over 1 million copies of the game were downloaded via pirating means and played on yuzu prior to the game’s commercial release.
Fast forward to today, Nintendo and Tropic Haze have reached a settlement that will see Tropic Haze pay Nintendo $2.4 million in damages (via secondary infringement) and shutdown yuzu and yuzu’s support of Citra, a Nintendo 3DS emulator. As part of the settlement and as a future insurance policy, Nintendo has also taken control of yuzu and Citra’s website domains and social media accounts. This is not the first time Nintendo has gone after the developer of an emulator and there’s a good chance that it won’t be the last either. More on the story here.
