Do not adjust your screen, it’s not 1997 again. Finally after years of rumors and behind the scenes negotiations, GoldenEye 007 has been released on modern consoles! Dropping last Friday, the beloved Rare Ltd. game that revolutionized first person shooters, and brought everyone’s favorite English spy to life, was released on Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch.
Both versions of the game are pretty minimalistic and straight forward ports of the original. The Xbox version received a graphics update to 4K, but has no online multiplayer feature. The Switch version kept the original graphics, but included online multiplayer. Most players, looking to revisit the classic without having to dust off the old N64 console from the attic, will be happy with the trip down memory lane. But like any re-release, or any new game in general, it hasn’t been as smooth as Xbox and Nintendo would have liked. Audio and graphic bugs are common for both versions. While the N64 version of the game never had to deal with these issues, the ported versions for next-gen consoles do suffer with clipping, texture movement, and unstable frame rates.
While remakes are rarely as good as the originals, the remastered port versions of GoldenEye 007 may be the fix you need. Even with some of the quality of life issues and the graphics that did not age very well, the game is still a blast to play. If you are a gamer in the Xbox Game Pass and Switch Online community, you can play GoldenEye 007 for free as part of the subscription service.
