PlayStation waited until the end of January to give its first big look at what 2024 has in store for fans of the console. Clocking in at just over 40 minutes long, the presentation showed off 16 games with some teases and surprises thrown in there. The announcements were a nice mix of coming out very soon, coming out later this year, and coming out in 2025 and beyond. Check out this summary of the games shown during this State of Play and decide for yourself what you are most excited about.
The State of Play kicked off with a trailer for Helldivers 2, showing off its shooter action to get fans excited for the sequel 8 years in the making. Helldivers 2 releases February 8 for PS5 and PC. This was followed up by the new action combat game Stellar Blade from Shift Up. The game features beautifully blended sword and gun combat on post-apocalyptic Earth. Be ready to dive into this one on PS5 and PC on April 26.
The first big surprise came in the form of yet another remake of a classic game, this time in the form of Sonic x Shadow Generations. Sonic Generations came out in 2010 and this new version puts Shadow in the titular roll with new levels and bosses to challenge him. This new version is set to release in Autumn 2024 on all platforms. PlayStation fans were treated to a PC game making its way to the PS5 in the form of V Rising, the isometric action game that originally launched there in 2022. The game is set to hit the console sometime in 2024.
A beloved property got a good amount of screen time next, with Silent Hill getting two different games into this State of Play. First off was an unexpected drop called Silent Hill: The Short Message that is described as a first-person survival horror game that is free to play and out now. That was followed by a new look at Silent Hill 2 Remake that looks great but still has no timeline for release for it.
The last big moments were courtesy again of some beloved properties. Until Dawn is getting the next gen treatment, with a new studio working on the PS5 and PC version of the game in a new engine. Kojima made an appearance as I think everyone always expects in these things and showed off footage of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the newly subtitled sequel. The game looks as weird and wonderful as the original and set to come out in 2025. Kojima wasn’t finished though as he revealed that a new action espionage game is in development, giving life to all the fans who are missing the Metal Gear series. Finally, fans were informed that a State of Play focused on Final Fantasy VII Remake is happening on February 6!
Other games shown off were: Zenless Zone Zero, the next free-to-play MMO from Hoyoverse that’s currently in development for PS5; Foam builder and party shooter Foamstars from Square Enix coming to PS4|PS5; Dave the Diver coming to PS5 along with a Godzilla collaboration; Judas is a first person shooter set in a city drifting in space with machines controlling everyone, the intriguing title currently is in the development phase with no news of a release window; Metro: Awakening VR takes players into the world of Metro in VR for the first time, releasing in 2024; Legendary Tales joins the VR announcements with fantasy action and combat, releasing February 8; Dragon’s Dogma 2 is releasing March 22, giving fans a new fantasy RPG to dive into; Rise of the Ronin also launches on March 22 and looks to be a deep open-world epic complete with intense combat and choices that drive the world around the characters.
