PlayStation is being sued in the United Kingdom for £5 billion ($5.9 billion) over the prices on Sony’s online PlayStation Store. In an interview with Sky Sports, consumer rights advocate Alex Neill is claiming “Sony has abused its position and ripped off its customers” as the primary provider of PlayStation’s digital games.

In the lawsuit, Neill accuses Sony of having a “near-monopoly” on the sale of digital games, which results in the overcharging of digital purchases of games and claims Sony is charging a 30% commission. Neill goes on to state that gaming is the biggest entertainment industry in the UK and that Sony is hurting gamers that can’t afford the high prices, “The actions of Sony are costing millions of people who can’t afford it, particularly when we’re in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and the consumer purse is being squeezed like never before.”

Neill believes the lawsuit could take years to resolve but believes if the lawsuit is successful, any customer who purchased digital games and/or DLC on the PlayStation Store since 2016, could be eligible for estimated damages between £67 and £562.
