It’s-a me, the latest Mario game to grace the presence of Nintendo Switch owners. Super Mario Bros. Wonder launched this past week to incredibly high critical praise, scoring a 93 out of 100 on Metacritic and a 92 on OpenCritic, with 99% of critics recommending the game. SMB Wonder slots into a tie for third highest, critically-scoring game of the year (so far) behind Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a side-scrolling platformer that sees the player work their way through levels across the Flower Kingdom, avoiding enemies, collecting power-ups and seeds, and new with Wonder…transforming into an elephant (because why not). In addition to the new zany transformation, there is another new feature that allows players to collect and equip badges to enable additional perks. There are three types of badges currently in game: action badges, boost badges, and expert badges, all granting different styles of skills and abilities.
SMB Wonder boasts eight playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Nabbit, and Yoshi) on its roster. It is also the first game to feature Kevin Afghani, the new voice of Mario and Luigi, following the retirement of previous voice actor and mainstay Charles Martinet in August 2023.
