After being acquired by Embracer Group earlier this year, Square Enix Montreal officially has a new name: Onoma. According to a post from the developers, “Onoma is Greek for name and names offer endless possibilities.” They add that this name means players “can be anyone, achieve anything, and go anywhere.” Onoma also has a fresh, new logo to go with this new name, eliminating any of the remaining connection to its previous identity.
Square Enix Montreal was purchased by Embracer Group officially back in August. It was one of three studies acquired by Embracer at the time, the other two being Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal. Besides acquiring the studios and all the talent there, Embracer also scored a treasure trove of IPSs to work with. The biggest IPs being Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain.
Onoma has been focused on mobile games for some years now and currently has 3 games listed as coming soon: Tomb Raider Reloaded, Avatar Generations, and Space Invaders. Onoma, along with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, are picking up speed on these new projects with the backing of Embracer Group. It’s only a matter of time until we learn what surprises are in store for fans of these classic franchises and what these studios could bring us next.
