Announced during the Meta Connect keynote on October 11th, the Meta Quest Pro was officially unveiled. Originally codenamed “Project Cambria,” the Quest Pro features an improved design featuring thinner lenses, a curved battery pack that goes around the head strap, and controllers with self-tracking capabilities.
Tech-wise, the Quest Pro is a sight to behold. Powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ platform (the first device to feature the new platform), the Quest Pro will be able to run at 50% more power than its predecessor the Meta Quest 2. The Quest Pro will also feature an all new optical stack, replacing the Fresnel lenses, and allowing for 10% greater pixels.
As confirmed earlier this year, the Quest Pro was designed for work and not specifically gaming. Meta touts a “mixed-reality” experience for the Pro in an attempt to blend virtual reality and the real world. Meta states they’re still supporting the Quest 2 with “a ton of content and updates still planned.” One of the updates for the Quest 2 VR unit is the addition of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. Unlike the PlayStation 5, the Quest Pro will feature backwards compatibility for all Quest 2 games and apps.
The new Quest Pro from Meta launches on October 25th, but is now available to preorder. For those that want the “mixed-reality” experience, it will set you back $1,499, roughly triple the cost of Quest 2.
