Heading into 2023, many critics had The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to game of the year award winner The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, on their shortlist for a number of award nominations. It’s pretty safe to say at this point that they made the right call. Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) is currently sitting at a 97/100 with a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic with 100% of reviewers recommending the game. Not only does that impressive score top the list of critical reviews for 2023, but also places the latest Zelda installment at the top of the pyramid of all-time game reviews on OpenCritic as well. Over on fellow games critic site Metacritic, TotK is sitting at a 96/100 with 88 reviews in and a user score of 8.6 with 1,740 launch week reviews at the time of writing this.
As with all Legend of Zelda games, the player assumes the role of Link as he makes his way through the landscape of Hyrule, and in the case of Tears of the Kingdom through the mysterious floating islands in the sky as well. Armed with new abilities and a nearly endless well of ways to feed creativity, players are having a blast with this one so far. To avoid spoilers, we won’t dive much more into the game in this piece, but we highly recommend checking it out if you’re into open world, adventure games and own a Nintendo Switch.
