Following Xbox’s slew of announcements last week, PlayStation is leaving July on a high note of their own with a handful of announcements to close out the month. From new details on PlayStation VR2 to new games coming to their PlayStation Plus service in August, this week’s news had a bit of everything.
Through The Looking Glass: While Sony has yet to give a release date for their upcoming PS VR2 headset, they have continued to drip feed details about the unit quite effectively. As of this week we now know that the headset will be see-through, allowing users to see their real-world surroundings with the press of a button, and that users will have the ability to customize their sensored play area to avoid potential collisions. More features: PlayStation rolled out a PS5 system software beta that included support for 1440p monitors, gamelists, and more. One of the new beta features allows for users to compare Stereo versus 3D audio, so that they can select which they prefer per game, while others include party enhancements like requesting a screen share and joining a friend’s game upon joining their party. More games: The PS+ lineup for August is full of variety with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, Yakuza Like A Dragon, and Little Nightmares headlining as August’s claimable games. Additionally, Sony has announced that the full Yakuza franchise will be headed to the subscription service with Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2 joining the “Extra” tier in August and Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 joining the “Premium” tier later this year (Yakuza 6 will also join the “Extra” tier later this year).
More control(ler): Popular iPhone game controller, Backbone One, is getting a PlayStation edition that matches both the white and black color and the button combo of the PS5 DualSense controller. The analog sticks however assume the traditional offset approach of previous Backbone One controllers instead of the standard in-line setup of PlayStation controllers. More
More financials: Last, but not least, Sony announced their FY22 Q1 earnings this week giving us a look at this quarter’s PlayStation financials. In comparison to their FY21 Q1: hardware sales were up 4% (bringing the total count of PS5s sold to over 21M), Software sales were down 26%, PlayStation Plus subs increased 2% to just over 47M, monthly active users dropped 3% to 102M, profit decreased 37%, and revenue decreased 2%.
